Take advantage of weekend rates if you can. If you have control over which days you'll be traveling, you can usually rent a car for less on weekends.

Search the internet for coupons. Just like retail stores, car rental companies send out coupons and people post these on the internet. Once you find a coupon, all you have to do is enter the coupon code on the website or print out the coupon and take it with you to the rental location.

Be aware of any upgrade offers. Occasionally, you can upgrade the class of your rental car (e.g. compact to midsize) for free. Why not drive around in style for the same price?
