Is your salt shaker following the motions, but giving you no salt? Do you shake and shake, but your food doesn't taste any more vibrant? You could be out of salt in your shaker.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Empty salt shaker
  • More salt
  • Rice
  1. Step 1

Realize your shaker is empty (or quite low). This sounds like an easy step, but with many opaque salt shakers, it isn't a given. If you're unsure whether there is any salt left, open up your shaker and take a peek inside.

  2. Step 2

Open your salt shaker. This process varies with different salt shakers, but there is usually a screw top, pop top, or lid underneath that will allow access to the chamber within.

  3. Step 3

Add rice. White or brown, it doesn't really matter. The rice absorbs humidity, preventing clumps in your salt. As an added bonus, it also helps break apart any clumps that may already exist. Depending on the size of your salt shaker, 10-20 grains should be plenty.

  4. Step 4

Add more salt. The easiest way to do this is from a large container with a metal pour spout at the top. There are other options, though - grab too many small salt packets next time you're at a restaurant, steal from the salt container over your stove, or knock on your neighbor's door and ask, "Can I borrow some salt?"

  5. Step 5

Replace the lid. Make sure it's tight.

  6. Step 6

Covering any openings, gently shake your salt shaker. This allows the new salt and rice grains to mix evenly.

  7. Step 7

Congratulations! You've refilled the salt shaker!

Tips & Warnings
  • If you spill any salt during this process, throw it over your left shoulder. This superstition will keep bad luck at bay.
