Things You'll Need:
- Flowers
- Base (vase, basket, etc.)
- Scissors (optional, but helpful)
- Optional: glass gems, ribbon, or other add-ons
-
Step 1
Decide on an overall look you want for your arrangement - there are two main ways to do this:
Start with a color scheme! This often creates stunning arrangements and is the safest bet to making a great flower arrangement that is visually pleasing to everyone! Pick one general color (there can be variations in shade) or pick two colors - pink and white for example or red and purple, whatever works with your decor or theme!
Or, start with a picture! Search online or through a magazine for images of flower arrangements you like - again, this is an easy way for a beginner to know that what they put together does look good. -
Step 2
Go shopping! Your local hobby or arts and crafts store should have plenty to choose from. If you find some of what you want at one store, absolutely get them and then move on to the next store for the rest!
For your flowers, simply follow the guidelines you've set for yourself! If your color palette is shades of green and cream, select flowers that have one or both of those colors in it. If there are hints of other colors, that's okay, but shy away from any flowers that contain colors in your palette but also large doses of other colors - they will detract from the overall aesthetic. If you are replicating an arrangement you've seen, such as in a picture, pick our similar flowers or colors as what you want.
One important part of creating a flower arrangement is to determine if you want variation in size of the flowers themselves as well as height of the flowers. Tight arrangements with flowers all similar in size and all the same height can be very striking, such as a bouquet or a table centerpiece. However, if your arrangement is not so focal, you'll want to be sure to have some variation in your arrangement, particularly in the height of the flowers. If everything you picked out by color is the same height, don't worry - that's what your scissors are for! Just make sure that you have room to cut some down without it becoming too small for your base --
Most often bases are vases or baskets, but also can be a bouquet holder or wreath or any other object that can sustain and look good with a flower arrangement!
Lastly, be sure to pick up some add-ons to give your bouquet a special touch! Ribbons and bows, glass gems, even strands of fake pearls or picks with rhinestones on the end can add extra glamour to your arrangement. -
Step 3
Take your base and loosely arrange your flowers the way you think you'd like them. Once you have a general idea, now is the time to bind them together if necessary (such as a bouquet), but still leave room for moving stems in and out! This is also the time, if you have decided how you want your arrangement, to alter heights. Pick one or two flowers to be highest and then a few inches lower, branch out and place more flowers spreading apart until it reaches the rest of your flowers. This should focus the most striking single flower near the top, but add depth with the bulk of the flowers further down.
-
Step 4
Once you have decided precisely how you want your arrangement, bind them well or, in the case of a vase arrangement, trim the flowers to the height your desire them to be!
-
Step 5
Lastly, add on any additional pieces you want! Place a ribbon around the vase or certainly around a bouquet! Add in rhinestone picks for sparkle or toss some glass gems in the bottom of your vase. Get creative (but don't overdo it!), and your arrangement will look like it was professionally done!
