Step 1
The first place to look for kittens for adoption is on large-scale networks like Pets911.com, AdoptAPet.com, and PetFinder.com. These websites will help direct you to your local cat shelters, and you’ll be able to learn more about how to adopt a kitten, see pictures of kittens for adoption, and more. This is an ideal way to begin the adoption process if you live in a larger city, as there may be many cat shelters to choose from.
-
Step 2
If you live in a smaller city, you may be able to find cat shelters right in your local Pet Smart or Petco store. These chains often have in-house facilities where you can adopt a kitten, and/or they may set aside certain days or weekends out of the month to have local cat shelters bring pets right to the store location. This is a great way to look into adopting for the first time, as there will be plenty of caring people to talk to, as well as a wide selection of all the supplies and accessories you would need when you adopt a kitten.
-
Step 3
Another option is to check your local Craig’s List site for people who have kittens for adoption, as well as opportunities to bring an older pet into your home that has already been owned. Usually, adoptions through Craig’s List are much less pricey (or even free) compared to cat shelters, particularly if the kitten has not yet been fixed or vaccinated. It’s very important that if you adopt a kitten through an individual, there should be some kind of contingency if the cat is ill or has medical problems that have not been disclosed. The benefit of using cat shelters when looking for kittens for adoption, even though most will charge a fee (anywhere from $50 to $150+), is that responsible cat shelters will make every attempt to provide new owners with the pet’s history, and the pet will have been cared for medically prior to the adoption.
-
Step 4
No matter how you decide to adopt a kitten, it is a truly selfless and wonderful thing that will bring joy to your life and provide a safe and loving home for a pet that desperately needs one. After you have found a cat or kittens for adoption that are just right for you and your family, websites like the Humane Society (hsus.org), PetPlace.com, and PetEducation.com will provide you with a wealth of tips, tools and information for making your adoption a success!
