Things You'll Need:
- Whole watermelon
- Carving tools
- Carving pattern
- Lots of patience
- Imagination!
-
Step 1
Check out Watermelon.org (link #1 in resources). This site has over 35 free watermelon carving patterns including a turtle, a birthday cake and jack-o-melon. Complete instructions are included for each pattern along with a photo of the completed project. These patterns range from basic (see the treasure chest one) to complex (see the T-Rex dinosaur). Any of these creations will leave your guests with something to remember!
-
Step 2
At Wikihow (link #2 in the resources) you can find quite a few watermelon carving patters along with step by step carving instructions. Some of the patterns include ideas for complementing your watermelon creation. For instance, if you were to have a tea party and carve the watermelon tea pot, Wikihow gives you plenty of ideas of things to serve along with your watermelon, combining the watermelon and tea party themes. This site also has a lot of good suggestions for using the removed portion of the watermelon by turning it into edible creations!
-
Step 3
Since carving a watermelon isn't all that different from carving a pumpkin, you can use any of the online free patterns for pumpkin carving to carve your watermelon.
The Pumpkin Wizard (link #4 in resources) has a lot of printable patterns to choose from - including a huge selection of kids favorite characters including Sponge Bob, Dora and the Backyardigans. In addition, there are presidential carving patterns and sports team templates. (Just to name a few)! How cute would it be to add a carved watermelon to match your child's birthday party theme?
NOTE: The link below is for the main index of available patterns. Once you have selected your pattern you need to go to the site's home page to view the carving instructions.
