How to Choose a Dog Handler

Choosing a professional handler to show your purebred dog.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

At the very beginning, you have to go to a dog show. It is very important to observe the show in progress and get a feel for the atmosphere. The people can be a bit overwhelming, but are almost always very friendly, so talk to the people who are just sitting around, especially anyone with the same breed of dog as you.

  2. Step 2

After your first dog show, you should have a good idea of the way things work. Hopefully, after talking to people, you even have a few leads on good handlers for your breed. If so, you are already on your next step: networking. The best way to find a handler who will show your dog well, and treat your dog with the care it deserves, is to ask around at a show. Of course, take all that you hear with a grain of salt, but if you hear from 5 different people that a certain handler is the best, he or she probably is.

  3. Step 3

Next, you need to take your dog to meet the handler, preferably at their house. This way, you can see what kind of living conditions your dog will be in whenever they must stay with the handler. Discuss rates, show schedules, and anything else that comes to mind. You also need to see how well the person handles your dog, and how well they treat you. Watch closely, and take note of how your dog reacts, as well. Animals are often a better judge of people than we are.

  4. Step 4

Finally, take some time to consider your choice. Think about the expense, the handler's reputation, any scheduling conflicts involved, and then just listen to your gut. If you have a good feeling, and the facts all check out, then congratulations! If not, don't worry. Simply repeat the process with as many other handlers as you must until you find the one for you. You will find the right choice eventually. Good luck!
