How to Tell if Tofu Is Bad

How to Tell if Tofu Is Bad thumbnail
Tofu can be prepared in a number of ways.

Tofu is a fantastic, affordable protein alternative, and cooking with it is quite easy. This soy product is packaged in airtight containers in large portion sizes, so many people don't use the entire pack in one recipe. Tofu is extremely perishable once the package has been opened, but it can be frozen for up to five months. Rinse leftover tofu and store it in an airtight container in fresh water, and change the water every day or two, recommends the University of Colorado Extension. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Open the tofu container and use your senses. Look at it, smell it, touch it. If you are scared to do any of those things, then the quality is suspect and you should throw it away.

    • 2

Check the water the tofu is stored in. It should be clear, so if it is yellow or brown, or if it has mold, it is not safe to eat the tofu.

    • 3

Sniff the tofu. If it smells rotten, it is bad. Tofu does not normally produce a pungent odor, so a smell is a sign that it is past its prime.

    • 4

Look closer at the tofu. If it is falling apart or looks curdled, do not use it. If it has been more than three days since you first opened it, don't eat it.

Tips & Warnings

  • Don't take a chance with food poisoning. If you are uneasy, throw it out.

  • Pay attention to expiration dates on unopened packages of tofu.
