How to Choose a Birthday Party Present for a 6 Year Old Boy

Choosing a 6 year old boy's birthday party present can be a big change from their 5th birthday. Six year old boys are now in Kindergarten and are starting to experience peer pressure. The Thomas the tank engine toys, coloring books, or rescue heroes may now not seem so appealing. This especially may be true when they are at a party opening their present in front of 10 other boys. Knowing a good gift at this age is not only important for the birthday boy but also for the boy or girl being invited to the birthday party. It is amazing how long kids remember the gifts they received from other kids at their parties both good and bad.

There are some timeless items on this list, but they may not get the "wow" factor as they are opened. Here are some birthday gift suggestions directly from a 6-year-old's advice.

   The top request on the list are Bakugans. Bakugan mean "exploding toy" in Japanese. They are like a modern Japanese version of war (card game), except they have magnetic cards that make the Bakugans open "explode" revealing the number of points it has. These things were impossible at Christmas to find. Find some Bakugans for a great 6 year old birthday present.

2. 

   Most boys this age love lego Star Wars. Even if they have not been exposed to Star Wars, it is a good bet that they will like other lego sets. Ask to find out what lego sets they already have and their favorite star wars characters.

3. 

   If the child has one, chances are #3 is Wii games. Find out what games they have. They will always want more if they have a system. If the child has a nintendo DS, you also cannot go wrong this choice either.

4. Webkinz are the next pick. Yes, even for boys. Six year olds love the online world they get to enter once they have the code that comes with each Webkinz. If the child already has one Webkinz don't worry, usually they will want more than one. They can set up an account for each one and manage all their Webkinz once they log in to their account. Some kids have 20-30 of these in our neighborhood.

5. Buy some Pokemon cards for a present.

   Pokemon is back and more popular than ever. Boys (and girls) love to have these cards to collect and trade. There is a whole system that ranks the cards but do not ask me how it works. The best cards to get according to them are the Pokemon tins which are metal cases with packs of cards inside.

6. The last good choice is a remote controlled toy. There are a lot of variety here. You probably just want to make sure the boy's Mom (if it is not you) is OK with your choice.

   As a Dad, I have tried all these items out and have had fun with the kids playing with all of them.
