Creating a chain stitch is the first step in crocheting any piece. A basic chain will allow you a starting point to begin sweaters, afghans, dishcloths, or any project you make.

The chain creates a base to begin your crocheted work and is considered the "staring row" in a pattern (rather than the first row.)

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • crochet hook, any size
  • yarn, any weight or color
  • scissors

Attach the yarn to your hook. Begin to do this by holding the yarn between your fingers about two inches apart.

Position your fingers so approximately three inches is left at the end of the chain. You will weave this three inch piece into the rest of the your crocheted item at the end of your project.

Pull the yarn until it is snug against the crochet hook. You have now attached the yarn to the hook and can begin crocheting. Hold the crochet hook in your right hand and the yarn strand in your left.

Pull the crochet hook down so that the working strand of yarn goes under the hook. Continue pulling the hook down until it meets the loop. Pull the hook down until it comes through the loop.

You just made your first chain stitch. To continue the chain stitch, repeat steps 11-15 until you have made the number of chain stitches indicated by the pattern, or until you reach the desired chain length.
