Explains how to check your cars oil and when to have it changed.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Your car or truck needs oil to keep the engine working good. How you check your cars oil. Keep the vehicle off, Open up the hood. There should be a lever inside your vehicle usually under the dashboard under the steering wheel and column. You pull the lever out to open the hood. Below I will mention how to check your cars engine oil and when to get an engine oil change.

  2. Step 2

Then go to the hood and there will be a lever under the hood in front to open the hood and a long bar in the front of the radiator to keep the hood opened, hold the hood up and there is a hole to put the other end of the rod to hold the hood in place on the right inside tip of the hood. When the hood is secure. Make sure it is secure before proceeding.

  3. Step 3

Then look for the dip stick so you can check the oil. The dip stick is usually on the left side or right side of the engine. The dip stick has a hook on it to pull it out from the engine. After the dipstick is removed, wipe it off with a rag or a paper towel, put it back all the way and then pull it out again. This will show you how much oil you need to ad,if any.

  4. Step 4

There will be 3 or 4 lines on the end. A low oil level line, medium oil level line and full oil level line. If the oil is on the first line you need to add 2 or 3 quarts, if the oil is on the medium line you need to add 1 quart or 2 and full line you don't need to add any oil. If you need to add oil. There is a oil fill cap you need to remove.

  5. Step 5

The oil fill cap is on one of the valve covers. The reason why you might need to add oil is if your vehicle burns oil and on smaller cars the engines run faster and wears the oil down quicker. New oil lasts a while, depending on how much you drive. You should get an engine oil change at least every 3,000 miles or 3-5 months.

  6. Step 6

But if you use your vehicle a lot you should change it sooner. The reason why engines need oil is to protect the engine and all the metal parts inside the engine, lubricate the engine parts, increase engine life and so the engine works and moves better. Oil that needs to be changed will be a soupy thinned out oil, will not protect the engine parts and ruin the engine and the inside. If you keep driving your car with soupy oil in it. New oil is thick and will protect the parts much better.
