Step 1
Create a place where your child can work on his school work. If a child has a hard time concentrating you may want to choose a quiet environment. Turn off televisions and radios. If your child has a hard time staying on task, then set up an area where they can be supervised and reminded to continue their homework. If other children are in the home without homework you can use this time as quiet time and have them look at books.
-
Step 2
Establish a routine with your child. Pick a time after school where your child works on homework everyday at the same time and same place. You can encourage the routine by offering a snack while they are studying.
-
Step 3
For kids that have a hard time sitting still, give them an object they can play with. You can use a squishy ball or similar object they can squeeze or play with while they work.
-
Step 4
Use positive rewards for a job well done. Make a big deal over completed homework. Allow play time before they have to do chores or other tasks. This encourages them to complete their work in a timely manner. If they think they have to do something else dreadful they will procrastinate.
-
Step 5
Offer your help if they need it. Sympathize that homework can be difficult but let them know you believe they can do it.
