Fondant has become a very popular icing for many who enjoy baking and bakery owners. This kind of icing can make a cake look very glamorous and exquisite when used properly. A smooth finish is what makes the cake look it's best.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • fondant
  • fondant smoother
  • iced cake
  • large can of coffee
  • sharp knife or pizza cutter
  • rolling pin
  • cornstarch or powdered sugar
  1. Step 1

On a clean surface place the fondant and roll it out with a rolling pin about 1/8 of an inch or if you want it a little thicker, 1/4 of an inch.
Use a little bit of cornstarch or powdered sugar to keep the fondant from sticking.

  2. Step 2

Roll the fondant out so it's longer than the cake itself. Before you place the fondant over the cake, measure it with a measuring tape and add two more inches just be sure it's going to cover the whole thing.

  3. Step 3

To place the fondant onto the cake, place the fondant onto the rolling pin then just lay it onto the cake. Take the cake with the fondant and place it on top of the coffee can. This will make it easier to smooth out the fondant.

  4. Step 4

Take the fondant smoother and start at the top. Glide the smoother across the cake to remove any air bubbles or wrinkles and continue with the side. Go all around the cake like if you are ironing a shirt. If there are wrinkles, do not worry. Decorations can cover whatever can not get smoothed out.

  5. Step 5

When you are finished, cut the fondant with a sharp knife or a pizza cutter to get rid of the excess. You are finally done! Take the cake off the coffee can and decorate it with icing or whatever you want.

Tips & Warnings
  • Be careful when the cake is on the coffee can as it may fall.
  • Never leave a fondant covered cake in the refrigerator overnight, the condensation will ruin the finished work.
  • Using buttercream icing on a cake before covering with fondant is best because icings that are too runny will only make the fondant slip off.
