How to Deal With a Bad Boss

A professional and respectful boss can make the workday enjoyable. But not everyone has the privilege of working with a good boss. Some people work alongside bosses who aren't interested in the well-being of their employees. They're only concerned with the bottom line and they thrive on making their employees' lives miserable. There are ways to cope with a bad boss and improve the work environment.

Instructions

    • 1

Don't give your boss a reason to complain. Bad bosses look for any reason to complain. Do your job well and do not add fuel to the fire. Avoid distractions that slow productivity, such as browsing the Internet. Arrive to work on time each day and do not take long lunch breaks.

    • 2

Keep a record with human resources. Document the problem you have with your boss. Report incidences to the human resources department to keep a record of your dealings with your boss.

    • 3

Approach your boss privately. Schedule a private meeting with your boss to discuss the problem and attempt to resolve the situation. If necessary, ask someone from human resources to sit in the meeting as a witness.

    • 4

Accept responsibility. If you've given your boss a legitimate reason to act badly toward you, take responsibility for your part in the problem and resolve to make changes.

    • 5

Resist the urge to retaliate. Arguing with your employer worsens the situation and can result in termination. Remain calm while dealing with the situation and go the extra mile to improve your work relationship. Complete work as assigned. Don't slack on the job. Instead, take the initiative.

    • 6

Open your eyes to new opportunity. If you don't foresee a change in your work situation, keep an eye open for new positions within the company under a different boss, or consider leaving the company altogether.
