Get Good Backlinks

'Backlinks' is internet-speak for active links on the web that lead back to your article, website, or blog. Good back links from reputable sites are a strong factor in how well your site places in search results, and in how much traffic your material gets. On the other hand, backlinks from spammy 'link farms' can actually hurt your visibility on the web. Here's how to get some excellent backlinks to your articles (at eHow or elsewhere) or to other places on the internet where you publish content.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • URL of the content you want to link to
  1. Step 1

    **Post at Yahoo Answers**

Yahoo Answers is a sort of silly Q&A site where members ask questions of any sort, and pretty much anyone in the world can take a crack at posting an answer. Many of the posts are inane, and it can be hard to find quality material at the site. However, if you make the effort to post a good quality answer to an open question, then you have good chance of getting chosen as the best answer, which helps make your post more visible.

You can search for open (unanswered) questions, and post an answer based on something you've written at eHow, or elsewhere in a blog or website. And, your answer can contain an active link back to your site... in other words, a backlink.

Just register at Yahoo Answers to begin posting. Most experienced users recommend that you do NOT post links in all your answers, as that might get you bounced from the site. Instead, use active links in about half your answers, and make your other posts link-free.

  2. Step 2

    **Post at Forums**

The internet is alive with millions of forums devoted to specific topics: real estate forums, automotive forums, gaming forums, craft forums, etc, etc. They can be a great place for back links, since the target audience is so well-defined: the readers are already gung-ho about the topic, and appreciate getting good quality information that they haven't seen before.

If you have, say, an interesting recipe, search for [ recipe forum ] or [ food forum ] or similar sorts of searches, to find an appropriate forum to make a post. Generally, you'll need to register at a forum in order to participate. Don't post anything off-topic to the discussion at hand, or you'll just generate bad vibes. Find a well-focused discussion where information on your article would be welcome, and post away.

Note that some forums do not allow newbies to post live links (backlinks) until they have met certain criteria, such as having made their first ten posts, or being a member for a month.

  3. Step 3

    **Post in Comment Boxes**

Less formal than forums are the many places on the web where you can post comments in response to a blog post, a newspaper article, and the like. These are very variable in character. Some allow posting of live backlinks from anonymous (unregistered) users, others require registration first, while still others do not allow links of any kind.

To find comment opportunities for backlinks, I suggest using a Google search strategy that's a bit complicated, but effective. Let's say you want backlinks for your real estate article. A Google search on

[ real estate "post OR add * comment OR comments" ]

will turn up dozens of places where you can post a comment and include a backlink. A second search with the asterisk removed will turn up additional opportunities.

Tips & Warnings
  • Of course, you can backlink (or crosslink) within a site. At eHow, for instance, use Add Related Articles to create internal backlinks.
  • There are backlink submission sites, services and software that promise to give you thousands of backlinks for your content. I don't use these, myself. If you decide to explore them, I would suggest keeping your eyes wide open.

on 5/25/2009 Great article! However, I think that yahoo answers do not give backlinks as the links are of the nofollow type and therefor do not contribute to link popularity or am I wrong?
