Things You'll Need:
- You will need time and a little Patience.
-
Step 1
You will need to determine a consistent exit so your puppy knows where to go when they need to go to alert you they need to use the bathroom.
-
Step 2
You will need to determine some kind of reward system so your puppy understands when they have done what you wanted. My reward was always a treat since Beagles love food. You will also want to reward them with verbal praise in a happy voice. (i.e. Good Boy or Good Girl)
-
Step 3
If they have and accident you can either clean it without making a fuss about it and just make sure you pay closer attention when they get near the door to warn you. You can also take them outside and say "Potty Outside" or whatever keyword you have chosen to used to mean use the restroom. It is important to take them outside as much as possible when it looks like they need to use the bathroom and positively reinforcing them when they do what the are supposed to.
-
Step 4
The biggest key as with any type of training is...CONSISTENCY. If you take your puppy to a different door every time they will get confused. If you use different keywords they will get confused. If you are consistent your puppy should start giving you a sign that they need to go out after 7 to 10 days. Some dogs it takes a little longer, but most dogs fall in to routines after 7 to 10 days.
