If you're travelling, booking last-minute flights and rooms can save you big, especially in these recessionary times. Airlines and hotels are more willing than ever to cut a deal, and renting a car off-site from the airport can save you concession fees. Ditch the collision coverage on your rental car as well; most standard auto policies cover rental cars too.

Plug that leaky toilet, buy low-energy bulbs that use less electricity and put in a smart thermostat to save money in your home. If you need to get a new fridge, get one of the new energy star-rated models, because they use 40 percent less electricity than previous models. Bundling your phone, cable and Internet services will get you a discount rate as well. Turning your water heater down to 120 degrees or wrapping it in an insulating jacket is a good idea too.

Be willing to swap babysitting services. If you're willing to watch your best friend's little ones for a night in return for the same favor, it can easily save you each $50.

The cost of membership at a wholesale club like Costco or Sam's Club may be worth the money as well, particularly for larger families. Also remember to purchase generic equivalents whenever possible, especially for medications and OTC drugs.
