How to Hit a Flat Serve in Tennis

The flat serve is a very effective weapon, as it is the fastest serve.

Difficulty: Moderately challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Grip the racket with a Continental grip, not a forehand grip (see the Related eHows).

  2. Step 2

Stand near the center mark for hitting down the centerline. Stand farther from the center mark for a wide, flat serve.

  3. Step 3

Assume the normal posture for a serve, with a sideways stance and your hands down.

  4. Step 4

Throw the racket to the "back-scratch" position as you toss the ball in front of you.

  5. Step 5

Toss the ball farther in front than you would for a slice, topspin or kick serve and farther to your right for right-handed hitters.

  6. Step 6

Throw your racket out of the back-scratch position, with your palm facing the net at contact with the ball.

  7. Step 7

Hit the ball with your arm fully extended.

  8. Step 8

Let your arm finish the serve on either the right or left side of your body.

Tips & Warnings
  • Mix a flat serve with other service choices, so it will not be predictable to your opponent.
  • Practice hitting down the line on the deuce side and serving wide on the ad side.
  • Tennis is a physically demanding sport that can result in serious injury. We recommend that you seek the proper equipment and training before undertaking this activity.

on 7/9/2006 To get a fast flat, without having to use a continental grip, use a full western. This allows you to use the full power of your arm. Throw the ball so it goes right in front of you and make it lower to make the ball bounce lower at contact with the ground. Smack the ball aggressively, as though you are hitting a smash. Work on snapping your wrist, and the ball will go in with power from your wrist and arms.

on 6/30/2006 When making contact with the ball in the air, try to hit the ball as high up as possible, to make it easier for yourself.
