If your child is struggling to read in school, there are a few things that you can do to help your child along.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Buy a Hooked on Phonics reading curriculum for your child, or purchase separate phonics books.

Spend time everyday with your child to go over 2-3 pages. It's most effective if you go through all of the material and do all the sheets.

  2. Step 2

Enlist the help of a tutor for your child. It's very tempting to enlist the help of a babysitter, but it's more helpful if you reach out to a college student who is majoring in teaching.

Be sure to interview them thoroughly. Their attitude and approach is just as important as their education. Pick the teaching style that will best work with your child.

  3. Step 3

Ask for extra help at the school your child is attending. There are often after-school and summer programs that can aid students struggling with certain skills.

  4. Step 4

Spend time each day reading something with your child. You should try to choose material that is enjoyable for the two of you, and try not to make it feel like a chore or something you dread doing.
