Find a Job in Animal Control, Animal Sheltering or Animal Advocacy

Love and respect animals? Want to work with them or on their behalf? A job in Animal Control, Animal Sheltering or Animal Advocacy may be for you. First think about in what capacity you'd like to work with animals. After you decide, educate yourself and then go after that position! Below you will find some helpful tips on finding that perfect job.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Computer
  • Your Resume
  • Required education for the position you desire
  1. Step 1

For jobs in animal control check out www.nacanet.org.
This is the National Animal Control Association. There a job posting section on their website. You can also check out the links page where links to other state animal control associations are located.

  2. Step 2

Jobs in all aspects of animal care, sheltering and control can be found at www.animalsheltering.org . This is a sector of the Human Society of the United States. You can search by job title or location. You can also post a Position Wanted ad. Job postings for working specifically for the HSUS can be found at www.hsus.org/about_us/employment

  3. Step 3

American Humane Association, an organization that advocates for both animals and children, has job postings both around the country and for their organization. That can be found at
    www.americanhumane.org/protecting-animals/shelter-professionals/resources/job-opportunities.html

  4. Step 4

Check and see if your state has a local humane federation. Many of the federations post job listings on their websites. A listing can be found at:
    www.animalsheltering.org/programs_and_services/networking_and_groups/state_federations_of_humane_societies.html

  5. Step 5

A fun site geared specifically towards animal control officers called ACO Funstop has a job posting forum. That can be found at www.acofunstop.com

  6. Step 6

Interested in working with rescued farm animals? For a listing of farm animal sanctuaries go to www.farmanimalshelters.org/

  7. Step 7

For a job in hard-core animal rights check out People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA). Their site is www.peta.org/about/jobs.asp

  8. Step 8

Some postings can also be found at regular job posting sites like www.Monster.com
or www.hotjobs.com . I also recommend checking out sites like www.craigslist.com or www.ilist.com . Many jobs in animal control working for your local government can be found on your state and township or city websites.

Tips & Warnings
  • Persevere. Send your resume to everyone! If you feel you don't have enough education then educate yourself! Try going to www.humanesocietyu.org and signing up for online classes or on site workshops.
  • Volunteer for your local humane organization and be sure to list it on your resume.
