How to Make a German Chocolate Cake

An easy and delicious cake to make is a German Chocolate cake. You can buy the German Chocolate cake mix pre made or make the cake yourself including the topping. You can use it for many different occasions.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • If you make the cake on your own you will need:
  • 1 package of German Sweet Chocolate
  • Pinch of salt
  • 2 cups of sugar
  • 1 cup of Buttermilk
  • 1 teaspoon of Soda
  • 1/2 cup of Boiling water
  • 1 tablespoon Vanilla
  • 1 cup vegetable shortening
  • 4 egg yolks beaten
  • 2 1/2 cups cake flour
  • 4 egg whites beaten
  • For the filling and topping you need:
  • 3 egg yolks
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/2 pint whipping cream or 1 large can evaporated milk
  • 1 Stick Butter or Margarine (8 tablespoons)
  • 1 tablespoon flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1/4 cup chopped pecans
  • 1 cup short-cut coconut
  1. Step 1

    If you decided to use a box of pre made cake mix follow the package directions if not you will need to follow these instructions.
    Melt chocolate in boiling water. Add vanilla and salt after chocolate is melted.

  2. Step 2

    Cream shortening and sugar and add beaten egg yolk. Add 3/4 cup of buttermilk alternately with sifted flour.

  3. Step 3

    Dissolve soda in remaining 1/4 cup of buttermilk add to creamed mixture. Stir in chocolate. Fold in egg whites.

  4. Step 4

    Bake in three 9-inch pans at 350 degrees for 25 to 30 minutes.

  5. Step 5

    For the filling and topping even if you use the pre made cake mix. You will beat yolks and set aside. Mix flour, sugar, and stir into milk or cream.

  6. Step 6

    Add butter or margarine, and cook over low heat until butter is melted. Pour small amount over egg yolks, beat and add yolks to milk mixture.

  7. Step 7

    Add pecans and coconut. Cook until thick, stirring constantly. Remove from heat, add vanilla, and then spread between layers and over top.

Tips & Warnings
  • A stick of butter is the same as 8 tablespoons.
  • You can use Splenda instead of plain sugar.
  • You can also use unsalted butter.
  • Be careful topping will be hot and can splatter.
  • Don't forget to add a small amount of to your egg yolks before adding them to mixture. Not doing so can cook the eggs.
