Step 1
How thick a tube is and what it is made from is a big consideration for floating on white water rivers. Car tire type inner tubes are made from puncture resistant rubber and are sometimes a much better choose than floats sold at Wal-Mart, if you are going through heavy rapids.

Step 2
How good a float tube works depends on how well it fits the body of the rider. If the tube is too small the rider will spend all day swimming instead of riding. If the tube is too large, again swimming instead of riding. Float tubes for white water need to be large enough to give a good solid support but small enough to control through rapids.

Step 3
Picking a float tube with seat is good is the river is slower and the goal is to float lazily along. If the river is faster and has rocks the seat can lead to a relaxed posture that gets the rider banged up on rocks as he goes down the rapids.
Handles are always a good thing on float tubes. Most manufactures float tubes have handles on them. If you get an inner tube for a car or tractor tire, make handles by tying rope around the tube in two or three spots.
