Step 1
The easiest way to research eBay listings is to study completed listings. See my article (sidebar) titled, "How to Price Items to Sell on eBay." The data returned from these searches includes listings that have ended within the last 30 days, both sold and unsold.
-
Step 2
Use the HammerTap research tool. This tool provides more detailed information than you can find on eBay. The results cover a longer time period and more advanced analytical tools are available. You can get a free trial to see if you like it. See the resources section below.
-
Step 3
Use Terapeak. Go to the website, click on PRICE REPORT, and type in the keywords for the item you want to research. You will see results with statistics on items with those key words. You can refine your search for more specific information. See the resources section below for a link to the site.
-
Step 4
Use MPire. This tool shows the selling prices and price trends of particular items across many different websites including eBay, Amazon, and major retailers. You can determine if the demand for a particular product is rising or falling.
-
Step 5
Listen to the experts. Many established eBay sellers sell hot item lists and do all the research for you. These experts already pay the fees for the research tools and spend their time gathering the information for you. For a small fee, you can purchase a list of current hottest selling items - many found at drug stores, grocery stores, the mall, outlets, and other stores in your community.

Step 6
See the resources section below for more tips and tools for eBay selling.

on 3/14/2009 I love MPire! I haven't sold on eBay for awhile, but I always used their research function when I did and it's very helpful. 5*
