This is for all of those girls who are making that first dreaded trip to the gynecologist. This can be a daunting experience, especially if you have no clue what to expect with your first gynecologist visit. Here are some tips to help keep your nerves at bay!

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

First you will be asked some questions about things like your menstrual cycle, sexual activity, and any irregularities you have experienced. It is important that you tell the truth, and don't worry, anything you tell the doctor is confidential. The nurse will fill out your chart after measuring your height and weight, and then take you to a room where you will wait for the doctor.

  2. Step 2

In this room the nurse will leave with you a thin paper "dress" that opens in the front, and a thin blanket to drape over you. You will have to remove all of your clothes and put the gown on, and you may cover up with the spare cloth.

  3. Step 3

When the doctor comes in he/she will probably ask you some questions about your visit, (such as whether you are wanting to get on any type of birth control, or are experiencing any problems). After the questioning is done you'll need to lay back and the exam will begin.

  4. Step 4

Ok, this is the scary part, but just remember to relax. You have no need to feel embarrassed, your gynecologist does this for a living, all day, every day, and for no telling how many years. A nurse will be present as the doctor does the breast exam (just pressing in a circle around each breast to check for lumps), and then he will do a vaginal exam.

  5. Step 5

Alright, you're probably a little freaked out about this part, but its totally routine. Your gynecologist will insert a finger and press around gently inside your vagina to check for any pain that might be a sign of a complication. If they do a pap smear they will also take a swab of your cervix (using something that looks almost like a long one ended Q-tip. This step will only take about a minute, so just try to envision yourself some place else for that long!

  6. Step 6

After the exam is over they will leave the room and you can get re-dressed. If there are no signs of any complications then you will soon be on your way out the door! They will send your pap smear off and call you in about a week if there is anything irregular that shows up.
