Blanching is a method of cooking vegetables that keeps them crisp and fresh and helps them keep their nutrients and color. Below is a guide on how to blanch green beans.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Green Beans
  • Large Pot
  • Water
  • Salt
  • Large Bowl
  • Slotted Spoon
  1. Step 1

Bring a large pot of water to a boil.

  2. Step 2

While the water reaches its boil, prep your green beans for cooking.

  3. Step 3

Once the water reaches its boil, add in enough salt to make the water slightly salty (use your own judgement depending on the amount of water being used), then carefully add the green beans.

  4. Step 4

While the green beans blanch for about 2.5 minutes, fill a large bowl with cold water and ice, leaving enough room for the green beans.

  5. Step 5

Use a slotted spoon (or other kitchen utensil) to remove the green beans from the pan and move them into the ice bath.

  6. Step 6

Let the green beans stay in the ice bath until they've cooled enough to serve.

Tips & Warnings
  • When available, use sea salt instead of table salt. Sea salt is the more natural form of salt and is healthier, plus has a cleaner taste.

on 9/28/2009 I have always wondered how long to blanch vegetables. I try steaming and they turn to mush. Will be trying this! Thanks!
