How to Create a Wood Texture in Photoshop

If you do any graphics work, either for the web or for other purposes, such as 3d modeling, you will eventually need to be able to make a good looking wood texture. The following steps will show you how to create a basic wood texture using only the tools in Photoshop.

    Open a new document in Photoshop. Make the size and resolution settings whatever you need for your project.

    Go to the Tools panel, and down at the bottom change the Foreground color to a brown. Then go to the Fill tool, and fill the canvas with Brown.

    Go to Filter, and select Add Noise. Then click Add Noise. In the dialog box that pops up, make the settings 30, Gaussian, and Monochromatic.

    Go to Filter, and select Blur. Then click Motion Blur. Make the settings Angle 3 and Distance 30.

    Create a new layer. Go to the gradient tool, and stretch a linear gradient from top to bottom in this new layer. Then go to the Layers panel, and change the blending Mode to Overlay. And there you have it. By the way, if you are creating this as the basis for a 3d texture, stop before step 5.
