Make Beef Tamale Pie To Feed Your Family For Under $10.00

Tamale Pie is an easy recipe. Filling, nutritious, and delicious, tamale pie makes a great affordable meal for a family of five.
Serve with a large can of refried beans and corn tortillas, you'll have a complete dinner your whole family will enjoy. This meal will cost less then ten dollars to make. It is an easy tasty main dish. Enjoy

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • FOR THE FILLING: 2 and 1/2 cups (3/4 lb) of cooked lean beef cubed- you can also use ground beef
  • 1 can (15 3/4 oz) of mild chili beans in sauce- if you like it spicy, use hot
  • 1 (4 oz) green chilies (optional add 1 can (4oz) of jalapenos for heat)
  • 1/4 cup of diced white onion
  • 1/2 teaspoon of cumin
  • 1/4 teaspoon of black pepper
  • FOR THE BASE: 1 package (8 1/2) of corn muffin mix
  • 1 cup of cold water
  • FOR THE TOPPING: 1/2 cup of shredded cheddar cheese
  1. Step 1

Heat oven to 425 degrees. Combine filing ingredients in a medium size mixing bowl. Mix well and put aside.

  2. Step 2

Combine cornmeal base ingredients, mix well. The mixture will be very thin. Pour batter into a greased 9 inch square baking pan. Spoon Beef mixture into center of batter (leave a 1 inch boarder).

  3. Step 3

Bake in 425 degree oven for 30 minutes or until cornmeal portion is lightly browned and begins to pull away from edge.

  4. Step 4

Remove from oven and sprinkle with shredded cheddar cheese. Let stand for 5 minutes.

Tips & Warnings
  • You can adjust the heat factor by adding jalapeno
  • Cheese topping is optional, but I like the cheese.
  • Serve with refried beans and corn tortillas to make a complete meal.
  • You can substitute cooked ground beef or cooked shredded chicken for the cooked cubed beef.
  • Enjoy
