Learn how to give your Greyhound companion the best and happiest life through love and needed care.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Patience
  • Loving home
  1. Step 1

Whether you've thought about adopting a Greyhound or you already have and need some tips on making him/her happier I'll try to help you along. First off, if you haven't adopted yet make sure you go to a reputable Greyhound rescue organization that take care of the rescued animals, not just a place in it for the money.

  2. Step 2

After you have your companion home you have to realize that these dogs have been through a lot. Read about the horrors that this dog has been through being used as a racing machine and not a living being. You may have already done this seeing as how you just adopted or have already had a Greyhound, but if you haven't make sure you do.

  3. Step 3

As far as food goes, for any companion you want to buy the best quality food but especially for your Greyhound. The store brand foods that are high in sugar and corn can cause weight gain and diarrhea in your Greyhound. For his/her water dish, buy a raised dish or just put the dish up on a higher surface. (This should also be done with the food dish as well)

After eating you should wait around an hour or two before letting your Greyhound run around or get exercise.

  4. Step 4

Make sure you buy a dog bed or have some sort of cushioned place for your dog to sleep and lay. Seeing as how they have such little body fat they need a soft place to lay for comfort. That lack of body fat also makes it necessary to buy them a coat for the winter. The combination of short fur and no fat make them get cold very easily.

Tips & Warnings
  • It may seem like a lot of work to take care of a Greyhound but it is well worth it. The love they return and the feeling that you have helped a once abused animal is well worth the time and effort.
  • NEVER leave a Greyhound outside all night to sleep. They are indoor dogs. If you can't do this DON'T GET A GREYHOUND!
