Step 1
Look around the house for a ball. Basketballs work wonders, so try to see if you have a basketball lying around your garage or backyard. If you like, you can purchase one at Wal-Mart for about $6.
-
Step 2
Get your basketball or volleyball, and make a slit in the ball. Fill the ball with some sand and then tape it up. This method is a bit messy, so you can try another way. You can try to drill a hole and fill the ball with sand using a funnel. Then, you can patch up the hole with a radial tire patch kit.
-
Step 3
If you want to adjust the density of your ball, you can considering using:
1) dry sand - density around 1600 kg/m^3
2) wet sand - density around 2000 kg/m^3
3) sugar - density around 850 kg/m^3
4) fine salt - density around 1200 kg/m^3 -
Step 4
Finally, you will want to add some grip to your new medicine ball. I covered my medicine ball with some layers of hockey tape. This does a good job in adding grip to the ball. You are ready to exercise now!

on 8/30/2009 Great instructions. If I may add a tip that I use we can have medicine balls of much more varying weights. I wanted some lighter balls than I was getting w/ sand of any kind for passing in a circle or playing catch w/ a smaller person. So I filled 2-5 gallon buckets; 1 all sand, 1 25% sand & 75% chopped styrofoam shipping peanuts. I put the 25% sand in the bucket at once. Then added the peanuts, about 15-20% at a time. I them jabbed into the mix w/ a pointed spade until the peanuts fit in the funnel. (Sometimes dampening the sand helps, but too much water and the peanuts float and get annoying.) If you want, an additional step is to take the "1st chopped mix, add it to a sock a bit at a time, and slam into a wall or floor for finer pieces. Then proceed w/ your method.
