Make A Moisturizer for Ichthyosis

People with Icthyosis need rich moisturizers that will hydrate their skin and promote exfoliation. This recipe is made from ingredients that won't suffocate the skin like Vaseline or Mineral Oil. The moisture will last all day, and the change in condition will be evident within five to seven consecutive days of use. Try the following steps to make this super-rich moisturizer for ichthyosis.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 8 ounces of Pure Glycerin
  • 4 ounces of Pure Aloe
  • 2 tbsp Olive Oil
  • 1 tbsp of your favorite scented oil (alcohol-free)
  • 1/4 cup Aquaphor
  • 1/4 cup cold water
  • 2 tbsp hot water
  • 1 handheld mixer
  • 1 large, round tupperware bowl (round bowls are easier to navigate with the mixer)
  1. Step 1

Combine 2 tbsp honey and 3 tbsp hot water in the large tupperware bowl. Mix with a spoon until completely blended. (If you touch this mixture, you'll be suprised at how it turns into an oil-like product).

  2. Step 2

Add the remaining ingredients to the large bowl. Whip the ingredients with the handheld electric mixer. If a creamier blend is preferred, add more Aquaphor. If a richer blend is desired, add more olive oil.

(Glycerin is used because it attracts moisture to the skin. It also retains moisture well throughout the day. Aloe is a lighter moisturizer that is known for penetrating the skin without being too heavy. Honey is also a natural moisturizer).

  3. Step 3

Apply moisturizer to entire body after bathing or showering. Wait 20 minutes before putting on your clothes. It may be necessary to use a towel to wipe away excess oil before dressing.

  4. Step 4

When the moisturizer is not in use, cover it with a large lid and keep it in a cool place. If the ingredients separate, shake the bowl or use the handheld electric mixer to blend the ingredients again.

Tips & Warnings
  • For best results, bathe or shower with glycerin soap as the leading brands can cause excessive drying and build-up for people with ichthyosis-related skin types.
  • To promote exfoliation, use the homemade lotion after you shower in the morning and use Lac-Hydrin each night before going to bed.
  • Lac-Hydrin must be applied to completely dry skin.
  • If you have open cuts or excessive peeling, do not use Lac-Hydrin as the acids will burn your skin.
  • If you are unable to use Lac-Hydrin, ask your doctor about Urea-based lotions and creams with salicylic acid.

on 9/7/2009 Thank you for the information on this site. My skin looks and feels better than I can ever remember it being. I have tried many different lotions, creams, etc, but nothing worked until now. For the first time I do not have fish scales, and my skin is soft and smooth. Thank you.

on 8/27/2009 Hi Lampeg. Try adding a little more Aquaphor to give the water something to bond to. I hope this helps. (My lotion separates from time to time as well, especially in warm weather)... Best of luck. =)
