Make a Mother's Day Hug in a Box

"A Hug in a Box" is the perfect gift for mom or grandma on Mother's Day. It is inexpensive, thoughtful, and easy to make. Handmade gifts are always most special. This is a present that will be cherished for years to come.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • box
  • paint brush
  • acrylic paint
  • acrylic sparkle paint
  • 3mm ribbon
  • jewels
  • paper
  • pen
  1. Step 1

    SUPPLIES
Purchase all of the supplies you will need at a craft store like Michael's or JoAnne Fabrics. The actual box can be either wooden or paper mache. They come in all different shapes. It should be a small box. Color choices for the paint, sparkle paint (with glitter), jewels, and ribbon is to your taste. Although, it is suggested to use mom's favorite colors.

  2. Step 2

    PAINT COAT #1
Take the small box and paint it one single color. It should be painted inside and out, top and bottom. Allow the box to dry. Make sure the top is open (if on a hinge) or off while it is drying so it doesn't get dried shut.

  3. Step 3

    PAINT COAT #2
Paint the entire box again with the sparkle paint. This will give the box a glazed effect. If you buy the iridescent paint, it will reflect the color of the box. Let it dry completely again.

  4. Step 4

    DECORATE
Arrange the jewels on the top of the box to add a decorative touch. It does not have to have a lot of decoration, because it is what is inside that is important. You want to keep the box as simple as possible.

  5. Step 5

    MEASURE
Take the 3mm ribbon and measure it to the length of your outstretched arms. This will represent how big your "hug" is right now. It is easier to have someone do this for you while you hold your arms out.

  6. Step 6

    WRITE
Write down the following poem on a small sheet of paper with a pen. Or type it up on the computer, shrink it to a size that will fit in your box, print, and cut it out.

    "A Hug in a Box"
    The ribbon in this box,
    is special you see.
    It measures the arms,
    Of only me.
    This little reminder,
    will always be here.
    A great big hug
from my (insert ordinal number for age i.e. eighth) year.

    Then sign and date it.

  7. Step 7

    WRAP
Put the ribbon and the poem into the box. Now you have "A Hug in a Box." Wrap it up and give it to mom or grandma for Mother's Day. Better yet, make one for each of them!

Tips & Warnings
  • More that one color can be used to paint the box, but if you are doing this with a young child or a group of children it is easier to stick to one color.
  • If you are working with a group of children, have them only glaze the outside of the box with the sparkle paint. It saves time and paint.
  • You may need a box of tissue when you give this gift.
