The 1954 film Godzilla made a big impression on a generation of impressionable children. I was no exception. We didn't really care that Godzilla was a representation of the United States and it's nuclear attack against Japan. Godzilla was a brand new monster that no one had ever seen before.

If you ask, many children who saw the film in 1954 have also made contingency plans to escape the foot-stomping, fire-breathing Godzilla. Here is my plan.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Timing is everything
  1. Step 1

Growing up in rolling hills with mountains in the background, it was easy to imagine Godzilla rising from the hills and coming towards our homes. It would have been relatively easy to escape from Godzilla in that environment if you could determine the path he would take. There are plenty of places to hide in the hills. The trick here is not to run in front of him, waving your arms and screaming. That would draw attention. Even as a child, I couldn't understand the people who saw him coming and then ran directly in front of the fire-breathing mouth.

  2. Step 2

If you are in Tokyo, coming out of a building and see Godzilla, there are several steps you can take. You can go back into the building and move towards the rear. If you go out the backdoor, then you will probably be on the next street. Next, determine which way he is heading on the other street. If you can't see him, listen carefully. You will be able to tell which way the screams are going and hear the buildings falling. You will want to move in an opposite direction, taking any alleys that will move you further away.

  3. Step 3

If you come out of a building and are halfway across the street when suddenly, there Godzilla is, move quietly towards him. The people again, who are waving their arms, screaming and running directly in front of Godzilla will have captured his attention. Moving quickly but quietly towards him will make you almost invisible.

  4. Step 4

Once you are even with his feet, pick your way slowly through the bodies, crunched cars and debris from the building. You will want to get past his feet to the base of the tail. At the base of his tail, look to the right and the left. This is time to make the decision which way to go. You will not have much time to move so find a building you can enter. You will want to get into the building and be moving towards the back before the tail swings in the direction you have taken. Do not wait until the base of the tail is directly in front of you.

  5. Step 5

These are basic escape plans for Godzilla. There may be other steps you can take. You will not know until you are faced with the situation but you may use these as guidelines. They should work in any larger city.

  6. Step 6

On November 29, 2004, a ceremony was held to honor the 50th anniversary of the first Godzilla movie. A star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame was unveiled. It's a testament to the movie that captured a generation and is still going today.

Tips & Warnings
  • Move quietly
  • Do not scream
  • Move sideways as much as possible
  • Waving your arms and screaming only makes you visible to Godzilla
  • Do not run directly in front of him
  • If you are in a car, get out and move to the side

on 3/27/2009 Until reading this, my family had no formal plan in place for the possibility of an attack from Godzilla. We've now posted your helpful article with the fire and police info by the phone, and are contemplating implementing the occasional Godzilla drill. Thanks, and 5*!
