How to Make Cheap Room Dividers

How to Make Cheap Room Dividersthumbnail
Use curtain rods at ceiling height to divide a room.

Dividing a room is an effective way to give it dual purposes or add privacy. This is often done by installing premade room dividers that look like folding screens. However, the cheapest way to divide a room is with curtains. Curtains can divide a room completely, and if heavy curtains are used, they can also mute sound. Install a curtain rod on the ceiling or use a tension rod to install curtains without drilling holes. Tension rods work well with light panels, such as those used in Japanese doorways.

    Instructions

    Things You'll Need

    • Measuring tape
    • Pencil
    • Ceiling-mount brackets
    • Curtain rod
    • Curtains
    • Spring-mounted rod
    • Panels
    1. Ceiling-Mount Curtains

      • 1

Measure the length of the ceiling, from wall to wall, and divide it into equal increments for each ceiling-mount bracket you are using. Note each placement with a pencil before installing.

      • 2

Drill a hole where you are installing the brackets. Insert a drywall anchor into each hole. Install the brackets by putting them in position and screwing the screws into the drywall anchors.

      • 3

Hang the curtains on the rod and insert the rod into the brackets.

      Pressure-Mounted Curtains

      • 1

Measure the space where you will hang the rod. Ensure the rod you choose is designed for the length of space you are dividing. Use a strong rod for wide spaces. These rods are only available up to 84 inches.

      • 2

Hang the curtains or panels onto the rod.

      • 3

Climb onto a step stool and hold the curtain rod in place. Turn one end clockwise until it fits the space between the walls. Continue turning so it is snugly in place.

    Tips & Warnings

    • (Alternate Idea) Attach the L bracket to the push broom stick with a good amount of color coordinating electrical tape. (How's that for cheap!)

    • Choose shower curtain fabrics that do not have a wrong side or that look great from either side.

    • Go to 1/2 price sales, discontinued stock, or bed and bath sales for great deals on fabric bath curtains.

    • Make sure the hem is at least an inch off the floor, this will help keep the curtain clean and prevent accidents!
