Step 1
Find a good thrift store.
It's important to find a good thrift store. Look up thrift stores in the phone book. Go to several different stores, in different locations. Make sure you go to different chains, or go to locally owned stores. You'll want to find a hidden gem of a store. -
Step 2
Find the jean aisle.
In most stores, men's jeans are in a different aisle then women's jeans. (Some stores, however, give women's jeans male sizing, so don't get confused!) -
Step 3
Find your size and judge whether the jeans are picked over.
If there are a lot of different pairs in your size, at a low price, look carefully through the rack. Otherwise, a few ratty pairs indicate that the rack has been picked over. -
Step 4
Look through the rack.
Look for good looking jeans. You don't want to come out with jeans that look worse than the ones you wore coming in. Just because a torn up pair of jeans is cheap, doesn't mean you should buy it. Look for jeans in good condition. -
Step 5
Buy jeans that were originally expensive.
Look for upscale brands. Avoid chain store brands. -
Step 6
Go for a classic look.
The strange jean styles of the recent past date quickly. Make sure you don't buy jeans that represent a forgotten trend. -
Step 7
Don't pay too much.
A pair of thrift store jeans should be around $7.00 or less. -
Step 8
Look for a sale.
Watch for advertising, or return to the store often. Some thrift stores have jean sales for as low as .50 cents a pair.
