Things You'll Need:
- Insect repellent with DEET
- Long loose clothing
- Permethrin spray for clothing
- Tylenol
- Doctor's care
-
Step 1
BE AWARE. Dengue fever is transmitted by the bite of mosquitoes (Aedis Aegypti mosquitoes). They usually bite people during the day. The illness is viral, with sudden onset of fever, severe headache, joint and muscle pain, rash, nausea and vomiting. Dengue fever can also start as or progress to dengue hemorrhagic fever, which is severe and sometimes fatal.
-
Step 2
TAKE PREVENTIVE MEASURES. To prevent dengue fever, there is no immunization or medication that will prevent it. You should stay in well screened, air conditioned areas; wear long loose clothing; use insect repellents containing DEET; and use a permethrin spray for your clothing.
-
Step 3
SEEK A DOCTOR'S ADVICE. Seek a doctor's advice if you get a fever after leaving an area where dengue fever occurs. To treat the fever and aches, use Acetomenophen (Tylenol) or paracetamol. Do not use aspirin, ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) or other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory because these act as anticoagulants. This is a serious issue with hemorrhagic fever. It is also important to rest and drink a lot of fluids. If the fever is associated with a skin rash, abdominal pain, easy bruising or bleeding, see a doctor right away. Severe cases require hospitalization.
