Pick a Glucose Monitor
Pick a Glucose Monitor

There is a large range of monitors out there on the market, so how do you know which one to choose.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

When choosing a monitor to test your blood sugar, look at more factors than just the cost.

Some of the items you want to check are amount of blood needed and the meter score for accuracy.

Does it take standard strips. You will want to see what the cost of the test strips will be and if your insurance covers them. Some insurances only cover certain meters and test strips.

Look to see if it has large and easy to read display.

Look for day averaging, date and time functions.

    What is the testing speed.

    Is it easy to use.

Check for overall size-is it easy to carry.

  2. Step 2

Newer meters will have features that make them easier to use than the older models. Some of the newer models can have automatic timing, error codes, instructions for visual impair people and even barcodes. Some of the newer models can connect to your pc to store test results and print them out. Some newer devices can test blood taken from alternative places on the body other than your fingertips like your upper arm or thigh.

  3. Step 3

You do not need a prescription to buy a monitor. They are available to purchase over-the-counter. Most brands will give you a basic model if you purchase their strips. Ask your drug store if they have coupons for free monitors but remember to check what the cost of the strips will be.
