When eating out, it's easy to eat too much of the wrong food. Today's portions are larger then ever, yet the food that makes up those portions if often full of carbohydrates and fat. In order to get a good deal, we may feel compelled to eat too much of certain types of food that we wouldn't otherwise eat. Many meals are filled with hidden calories. Here's how to eat less at restaurants.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Eat appetizers instead of a main course. Having a few healthy appetizers instead of a heavy meal is a lighter way to enjoy a meal.

  2. Step 2

Split portions. Most restaurant meals can really feed two people. Split your next meal at a restaurant by asking for a second plate.

  3. Step 3

Avoid fried foods. Most of the calories in a restaurant meal come from fried side dishes. Order your hamburgers and sandwiches with a side salad instead of fries.

  4. Step 4

Ask the server what the lightest items on the menu are. Servers know which food are relatively healthy and served in small portions.

  5. Step 5

Avoid buying unhealthy food because it's slightly less expensive. Buy a lighter dish even if its more expensive, then save the extra money by only drinking water with your meal.
