Parks are great for family fun!

Summer has many benefits, including warm weather that makes it enjoyable to be outside. Unfortunately, not all of us take advantage of this and stay inside. The summer is a great time to start your family on a fitness regimen. Besides, when you do physical activities as a family, it's more fun and you have many more options! So get off the couch, turn off the TV, and put some comfy clothing on because it's time to get in shape with the whole family!

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Calendar
  • List of Family Chosen Activities
  1. Step 1

Write down activity suggestions from the entire family. Since the whole family is going to be getting in shape together, everyone should get a chance to speak up. Let your children suggest some of their favorite activities, whether they're done at home or away from home. They need to be included in order to have fun getting fit and in shape!

  2. Step 2

Designate an activity time. You might have a day or two that would be the best for your family fitness time or you may have the option of any day. Either way, reconcile everyone's schedules and pick a day or two for family fitness activities.

  3. Step 3

Plan your activities for the first month. A great way to do this is by writing each activity on a piece of paper, then fold them and put in a bowl, hat, etc. You or your children can draw one at a time and then on your calendar, each designated day you chose for fitness day, jot down the activities as they are drawn. For instance, you drew kickball first, it will be your first activity on that day. Now how many activities you do a day is up to you.

  4. Step 4

Keep a fitness log for each family member. This is especially beneficial for children that have special needs or areas you want to encourage them to work on. One thing to consider is on the first page of the log, mark the family member's name, age, date, weight, and height. This way at the end of every month you can update the date, weight, and height to see the changes.

Tips & Warnings
  • The activities you choose do not have to cost money. You can do many physical things outside and inside your home. See the resources for some great ideas.
  • Encourage the family to stay on track. If you have to miss a day due to a personal emergency, etc, try to make it up on a different day.
  • Even when you aren't doing your family activities, encourage yourself and your children to get up and do something. Turn the tv or computer off and do house chores, etc. At least you will be getting some kind of physical activity.
