Reading Nutrition Labels

This how to article will help you navigate your local grocery store and decide which products are healthy choices for you and your family.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Shop the perimeter of the store first (it is where all the fruit, vegetables and other nutritious foods are). The inside aisles contain processed drinks, snacks and other non-essential products.

  2. Step 2

Always read your nutrition labels, especially if you are purchasing a new product. Nutrition labels tell us everything we need to know about a product.

  3. Step 3

When buying fruits and vegetables, think: fresh first, then frozen and if you have to, canned. Frozen fruits and vegetables are usually frozen at their peak freshness without any added ingredients. Canned fruits and vegetables can have added sugar, salt and other unnecessary ingredients.

  4. Step 4

If you are buying meat buy all-natural lean, organic or grass-fed.

  5. Step 5

Try to buy organic eggs, milk, fruit and vegetables whenever possible.

  6. Step 6

Don’t grocery shop when you are hungry.
