do a Perm

If you need body to limp hair or just want some curl to straight hair, a perm is the trick. Doing a perm on somebody can be a task. This will hopefully make sense.

Difficulty: Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Perm rods
  • End Papers
  • Rat-tail Comb
  • Hair Clips
  1. Step 1

First you need to shampoo the hair with a clarifying shampoo. This helps to strip away any chemicals or build-up in the hair. After the shampoo add a conditioner to the hair then rinse. Keep in mind, after a perm DO NOT shampoo the hair for 1-2 days.

  2. Step 2

Put on a smock over the clothes. You want to make sure that you protect clothing. Then place a towel around neck, a chemical cape, and then another towel.

  3. Step 3

Then you will want to start at upper head at forhead. Slice a small section of hair. Make sure the hair is good and wet. This helps to roll hair and it keeps the end papers on. With each section, the ends you will wrap with the end papers. This helps to protect the ends from the chemicals. Go all the way down to nape then do the side sections.

  4. Step 4

Then open the perm box and take everything out. Read the instructions because every perm is done differently. The basics of a boxed perm is the chemical solution and a neutralizer. Place coton around the hairline.

  5. Step 5

Put on each rod the chemical solution. You do not have to soak each rod but put it on each rod. Wrap around head over the rods a plastic cap. They usually come with each perm box. Now depending on the perm, it will tell you whether you need to sit under a heated dryer or not. It will also tell you for how long to wait. It depends on regular hair or colored hair. Also it depends on how resistant the hair is. You could wait for 10-20 minutes.

  6. Step 6

When the time is up, take one rod half way down to check the curl. If it hasn't curled, wait another 5 minutes. If the hair is curled, then rinse the hair wrapped in rods. Do NOT take them out yet. Make sure you rinse very good to get all the solution out. Rule of thumb is to rinse for 5 minutes.

  7. Step 7

After rinsing blot the perm rods with towels. You want it to still be wet/damp but not dry. Then add the neutralizer to each rod of hair. Again you do not have to soak them but go over each one. After wait for 5 minutes. Then rinse hair for 5 minutes. Personally before I rinse the neutralizer out, I go ahead and take the rods out then rinse for 5 minutes. Put a little gel into the curly hair but let hair dry naturally. This will help with frizz.

Tips & Warnings
  • Do NOT shampoo hair after a perm for 1-2 days.
  • You can rinse it with water just no shampoo.
  • If your hair does not take curls well, I would not shampoo or rinse hair for 2 days.
  • If hair is overporous, it may not be a good idea to have a perm until the strength is better.
