Feed Pet Fish

Feeding your pet fish a proper healthy diet is crucial to maintaining their health and longevity. Read on to learn how to choose fish food for your pet fish.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Determine whether your pet fish are omnivorous, herbivore, or carnivore. Herbivores eat plants, not meat, while carnivores principally eat animals, both live and dead. Omnivores eat both plants and animals as their primary source of food. Provide them with food according to their dietary type.

  2. Step 2

Familiarize yourself with your pet fish’s eating habits. While most fish eat food floating on or in the water, bottom feeders will need to be fed food that sinks to the bottom of the tank. Nocturnal feeders only eat in the night, and need to be fed just before you turn off the lights.

  3. Step 3

Provide your fish with a balanced diet. Give them different types of food, combining fresh, dry and frozen foods.

  4. Step 4

Feed omnivores and carnivores only once or twice a day. Herbivores have smaller stomachs and tend to graze, so they need to be fed small amounts of food all through the day. Alternatively, provide live aquatic plants that they can nibble on in between feedings. need to be fed small Feed them only as much as they can eat – this is sufficient for most types of fish.

  5. Step 5

Do not overfeed your fish. This will not only clog up filters, but also rots quickly and releases harmful toxins into the fish tank water. The recommended amount is to provide only as much as the fish can eat within five minutes. Use a fish net to remove any uneaten fish food that is left after the fish have had their fill.
