Breast infections (also known as mastitis) are very common in mothers that breastfeed. Symptoms may include a hard, tender, hot, painful lump in the breast, red streaks emanating from the lump, redness, engorgement, fever, flu-like body aches, and chills. One way to treat a breast infection is by taking antibiotics prescribed by a doctor. Many breast infections, however, can be treated at home without using antibiotics. Here's how.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Use a hot compress or a moist, hot towel on the lump for twenty minutes and then massage the lump as much as you can. Repeat frequently throughout the day.

  2. Step 2

In the shower, let hot water run on the affected breast while massaging the lump.

  3. Step 3

Before nursing, warm the breast with a hot compress or moist, hot towel. Begin each breastfeeding session on the affected breast, even if you are using the one breast per feeding method.

  4. Step 4

Breastfeed at least every two hours.

  5. Step 5

    Drink plenty of water.

  6. Step 6

Sleep as much as you can between feedings.

  7. Step 7

Avoid any tops or bras that are tight against the breast.

Tips & Warnings
  • Following these steps can also help with plugged ducts.
  • When you are laying in bed, try keeping the hot compress or moist, hot towel in place by slipping part of it under the bottom band of your bra.
  • If your fever does not break within 24 hours or your breast does not begin to feel better within two days of following these steps, see your doctor. He/she may or may not prescribe antibiotics.
  • Be aware that if you breastfeed while taking antibiotics, a yeast infection may develop in you and/or your baby.
