Feel free to bat your lashes

For those of us with stick-straight lashes, curling them can seem daunting. It's possible to obtain a more open-eyed look, even while forgoing all other eye makeup. Learn how to reliably curl your lashes, and keep them that way for the rest of the day.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • comfortable lash curler
  • waterproof mascara
  • patience
  1. Step 1

Get the best tools you can afford. Highly rated are the Shu Uemura curler, and Diorshow Waterproof Mascara available at stores like Sephora.

  2. Step 2

Start with clean lashes. Ensure any old, dried mascara is completely gone.

  3. Step 3

Pick up the eyelash curler, with the tool's curve fitting the curve of your eye. Open the handles like scissors, and the "jaws" of the curling cushions should be open.

  4. Step 4

Raise the curler to your upper eyelashes. Get as close as you comfortably can to the roots of your eyelashes, then clamp the curler jaws by pressing the handles together. Hold in place for 10 seconds.

  5. Step 5

For a more natural swooping curl, try easing further out on the lash, and gently curling for a few more seconds.

  6. Step 6

Immediately apply waterproof mascara. Start at the underside at the base of your upper lashes and work in a tiny zig-zag motion upward.

  7. Step 7

Repeat steps 3 though 6 on the second eye.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use curler with soft cushioned clamp. Hard plastic should be avoided.
  • Regular (non-waterproof) can be more goopy and weigh down your curl.
  • Trust your comfort level; you shouldn't feel pulling or pinching. If you do, try easing out a bit from your roots.
  • Remove all eye makeup before going to bed.
  • Don't clamp too tight; doing so will give you bent lashes.
  • Be careful not to tug as you clamp. It's better to have straight lashes than no lashes.
  • In the same vein, don't try to curl lashes that already have dried mascara on them. The lashes may break off.
  • Any curl process using heat or chemical (perm) is very risky for eye safety.
  • Rest your eyelashes from time to time, having them curled every single day will eventually cause trauma to the roots.
