Finding affordable and convenient housing while at UC Berkeley may sometimes seem more challenging than getting into the school itself. When looking for housing you'll want to consider the cost, distance from campus, safety, and living standards. Finding the right place is important because you will need room to study and relax from Berkeley's rigorous academic load. Make sure you consider all of your options before making a commitment.

  1. Step 1

DORMS. Like any other college, dormitory life is always an option. If you don't mind sharing a room, living in the dorms for at least your first year is a great way to meet people.

  2. Step 2

CO-OPS. The Berkeley Student Cooperative is a not-for-profit housing cooperative that provides affordable housing to full-time students. Students from UC Berkeley and local community colleges are eligible to apply. They own 20 properties near the UC Berkeley campus. The biggest downside is that they are not open during the summer. Check out the UC CP-OP's website to learn more.

  3. Step 3

PRIVATE HOUSING. There are many apartments and studios located near campus, but this is the priciest option. Renting a room in a house is usually cheaper while still offering the privacy of your own room. Using the ever-popular Craigslist (which originated in San Francisco) is a great way to find private housing in Berkeley. It is easiest to find housing in May, June, and July when most of the student population takes off for the summer.
