Things You'll Need:
- clean litter box
-
Step 1
Before arriving home with your new cat, have a clean litter box set up in the permanent place where it will be expected to use the litter box. This should be a place that is easily accessible for your cat and clean and clear of clutter. Don't set up a litter box next to a washing machine or other loud area of the home if there is a possibility your cat is easily startled.
-
Step 2
Carry your cat to the area where the little box is set up. Hold your cat securely over the top of the litter box and then lower it down to about six inches over the litter. Gently drop the cat down so all four of the cat's feet land in the litter box.
-
Step 3
Turn and walk away, giving your cat privacy to explore the litter box. If the room has a door and the cat will be safe in the room along, leave the room and shut the door gently. Cats like privacy when using a litter box. At this point you will probably hear the cat pawing around in the litter box doing its business.
-
Step 4
If the cat wants to leave the room and has not used the litter box, let the cat leave but monitor it closely. Periodically carry the cat back to the litter box and repeat the process until it uses the litter box. Don't force the issue or hold the cat in the litter box against its will or it may associate the litter box with negativity and may not use it in the future.
