How to Make a Hard Futon More Comfortable
A futon is a piece of furniture that serves as both a couch and a bed by combining a collapsible wood frame and a mattress. Some futon mattresses become hard over time because of extended use. The mattress becomes compressed and uncomfortable. You can add comfort to your futon mattress by adding a piece of foam to the mattress. Purchase foam or an egg crate -- a foam piece designed for a bed -- at your local sewing notions or home goods store. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions
-
Egg Crate
-
1
Purchase a standard egg crate that is the same size as your futon mattress.
-
2
Flatten your futon bed so that it resembles a standard bed.
-
-
3
Unroll the egg crate on top of the mattress. This may take two people, as the egg crate may want to roll up on its own.
-
4
Place a fitted sheet on top of the egg crate. Tuck the corners of the sheet around the futon to secure the egg crate to the futon.
Foam Section
-
5
Purchase a piece of standard foam from a sewing supply or fabric store that will fit half of your mattress.
-
6
Lay the futon flat and unzip the cover. With the help of a friend, slip the half-section of foam under the futon cover so that it covers the bottom half of the futon.
-
7
Zip up the futon cover.
-
8
Position the mattress on the futon frame so that the foam-covered half of the futon will form the seat of the futon couch. Pull the futon frame upright into the couch position.
