How To Find and Download Historical Stock Prices From Yahoo! Finance

Save

Perusing historical stock quotes is a key to researching a stock, and finding the value of a stock on a certain date may be crucial to determining the potential capital gain you face on any particular sale. Yahoo's financial site has a wealth of data to tap.

Things You'll Need

  • Computer
  • Internet connection

Navigate to the Yahoo! Finance site (find a link in the References section) and enter the ticker symbol for the stock whose historical prices you want to retrieve into the text box beside the "Get Quotes" button near the top left corner of the page. If you do not know the ticker symbol just begin typing the name of the company into the text box. Select the company from the drop down list that appears or press "Get Quotes."

Select the "Historical Prices" link from the "More On..." box to the left of the current quote.

Yahoo! Finance will return a set of daily historic prices for the stock you selected. You can change the parameters for the search in the "Set Date Range" box. Here you can change the start and end dates for the search as well as the frequency of prices to return (i.e., daily, weekly, monthly).

Once you have the data you want scroll to the bottom of the list of prices and select the "Download To Spreadsheet" link. You can choose to save the data to your hard drive or open it directly into your spreadsheet software.

Tips & Warnings

  • Yahoo! Finance will give you Open, High, Low, and Close prices plus Volume for each period you requested.
  • You will also see a column called Adj Close. These prices are adjusted for dividends and stock splits.
