How to Find a Caregiver Support Group

How to Find a Caregiver Support Group thumbnail
Even though my mom is delightful and fun, sometimes, I just need some support too

Sometimes, being a caregiver means that you need care too. The stress of being responsible for another human who needs your help can be overwhelming. Hopefully, caregivers have their own personal network of friends and family to help them cope. But, if you don't have that kind of a support network, finding a caregiver support group on the internet can be the next best thing.

My Mom still makes sure I wear my shoes....

I'm the primary caregiver for my darling elderly Mother. Thankfully, she doesn't really require much care beyond daily tasks such as preparing meals, bathing and clothing. My friends are instrumental in spelling me for overnight trips once in a while or that vacation I yearn for but, when I have a question about elderly care, I head off to the internet for a caregiver support group specifically tailored to those caring for elderly parents.

Friend Bobbi is our biggest fan

Whomever you care for and whatever their condition may be, there are people out there in the exact same situation. I've even met people here on eHow who seem to be living parallel lives in caring for their elderly parents. Finding a caregiver support group starts with researching your charges condition on the internet.

Friend, Victoria, keeps me emotionally propped up

Start a Google search with a description of whom you're caring for. For example, if you're caring for elderly parents, type 'Elderly parent caregiver support' into Google. Among the many sites which appear is AARP - always a good place to go for advice on aging. If you're caring for someone with MS, type 'MS Caregiver Support' into Google to find a list of sites dealing with this particular issue. You may need to weed through the searches to find good support groups by they're there.

These motley characters are all instrumental in holding us up

Support groups are always available. Don't think that you're weak by asking for help yourself. In fact, you need to stay healthy (mentally and physically) in order for you to continue to help your charge. And, remember to be supportive of others in the group - answer their questions with the wisdom you've amassed.

Care for the Caregiver is so important. The Caregiver has a life and emotions and needs to vent and do things they want to do, besides providing care. Caregivers are wonderful people and thank you for this article.
