Keeping your spa filter clean is important to keep you healthy when using the spa. The job of the spa filter is to clean the water, ridding it of algae, bacteria, hair, dead skin, bugs, leaves and assorted trash that contaminates the water. Filters also help to ensure your pump doesn't get clogged by debris, which could damage the pump. Be sure to clean your filter regularly to ensure you have clean, healthy water running.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Water Bleach Bucket Hose with Nozzle
  1. Step 1

Decide how often the filter should be cleaned by determining the size of the filter, how often the spa is used and how much debris is allowed into the water. As a general guideline, spas should have their filters cleaned about once a month.

  2. Step 2

Shut off the power to the spa before attempting to remove the filter.

  3. Step 3

Locate your filter. Filters are typically located along the main water path and are usually slightly visible inside the spa. Look for a filter storage area in the tub. Usually these spots are either lidded or canister or basket shaped. If you can't locate the filter, refer to your owner's manual or to the manufacturer's website for further assistance.

  4. Step 4

Open the filter storage area. If there is a lid or cap, turn it counter-clockwise to loosen it.

  5. Step 5

Check the filter for damage such as cracks, bends, collapsed areas, brittleness or extreme discoloration. If any of these problems is discovered, dispose of the filter and replace it. A filter should be replaced every year even if not damaged.

  6. Step 6

Clean the filter by hosing it off using a hose with a nozzle attachment. Spray forcefully, power wash style. Be sure to allow water to clean between each filter pleat. Wipe out the filter storage area with a cloth or sponge to rid it of any debris or residue as well.

  7. Step 7

Soak the filter in overnight in a dilution of bleach and water. Pour 1/4 cup of bleach per gallon of water into a bucket. Keep in mind there are also specially formulated filter cleaners available that you may wish to try instead of bleach. If you use a special cleaner, be sure to follow the instructions on the package.

  8. Step 8

Rinse filter once again by spraying it with a hose. Allow filter to dry, then reinstall.
