Computer Virus

According to Spybot, February, 2009 there are 287,524 computer viruses. Bits of malicious code, viruses are designed to self-replicate and infect a computer system without the user's knowledge. Spread via disks, email attachments, and infected websites, viruses can be difficult to get rid of especially if they become embedded in the registry, the database that stores the options and settings for the operating system.

Instructions

    • 1

Run your anti-virus software. Norton, McAfee and AVG, can diagnosis and usually correct your virus infection automatically, including fixing the registry.

    • 2

Use Windows System Restore. If the anti-virus software fails to correct the problem, click Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools, > System Restore.

    • 3

Click "Restore My Computer to an Earlier Time" and then click "Next."

    • 4

Choose a recent restore point, that was prior to your system being infected by the virus. System Restore will work its magic and reboot the computer to the previous state.

    • 5

Use CCleaner to clean your registry. If all else fails, try CCleaner, a freeware registry cleaner that will keep your computer running smoothly (see resources).

Tips & Warnings

  • It is possible to manually enter the system registry to try to remove any changes effected by a virus. Click Start > Run and type in Regedit. You can then modify and delete entries and folders from the registry as needed. This is not recommended for below expert-level users.
