How to Set Up a Wireless Network for DSL
Setting up a network to share a DSL connection has never been easier. Wireless networking technology allows for setup that is as simple as plugging the router into the wall and the modem, then running the software configuration. The automatic network configuration tools of today's operating systems eliminate the need to manually configure the connection to make it work. This process is relatively easy, and most people of average skill level can finish the job in around 30 minutes.

1
Plug the DSL modem's Ethernet cable (also called a networking cable) into the port on the back of the wireless router labeled "WAN" or "Internet." Plug the router's A/C adapter into the wall outlet, and plug its power jack into the back of the router. Finally, briefly unplug the power from the DSL modem for a few seconds, then plug it back in. This forces the modem to recognize the router.

Turn each computer on. Any device that already has integrated wireless connectivity is already prepared to connect to the network. To add wireless capability to a computer, plug in a USB wireless adapter. These are available for less than $40 at most major electronics stores. Double-click on the Wi-Fi icon located in the lower-right hand corner of your screen, and click on your network's name to connect. This will usually be your router's brand, and it is almost always the network with the highest signal strength.

Secure the wireless network by enabling WPA encryption. This will keep outsiders from using your connection or accessing your files and personal information. Consult your router's documentation for details on how to enable this feature, since every model has a different method of accessing its configuration menu.
